Google Chrome is an immensely popular browser, and for good reason. It’s fast and offers a host of convenient features. However, if Mac users switch to Safari, they can extend their laptop’s battery life for a few hours, according to Apple. Chrome is a notorious battery life hog, and takes up a fair bit more memory than comparable browsers, which explains the increased drain.

Safari isn’t a bad browser, either. It offers many of the same features as Chrome and is getting some major improvements with the Big Sur update, much like IOS 14. While many jump to iPhones as Apple’s primary draw, the Mac is still a great option for a variety of professions, and increasing battery life, one of MacOS’s biggest criticisms. The change could help extend battery life by 1-3 hours, depending on tasks performed.

Of course, it’s a trade-off. Google Chrome still boasts a better UI and a more integrated experience, so it makes sense that some users may be apprehensive to walk away from it, even if it may increase battery life.
