While a release date has been scheduled for the Universal project, there are hardly any details about the upcoming film available at this time, including a working title and casting updates. This marks the latest in a profitable partnership between Shyamalan and Universal, a working relationship the filmmaker enjoys so much that he has convinced other big Hollywood names like Christopher Nolan to pursue it.

The new upcoming project is set for an April 5, 2024 release, as indicated by Universal Pictures. This project marks the sixth collaboration between the acclaimed filmmaker and the studio, with the first 4 of these (The Visit, Split, Glass, and Old) grossing a combined $713 million for Universal. Knock at the Cabin released its first trailer featuring pro-wrestler turned movie star of Dune fame Dave Bautista alongside Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, David Groff, and Pennyworth’s Ben Aldridge. The thriller is the fifth collaboration between Shyamalan and Universal.
While Shyamalan has been an unquestionable asset to Universal in recent times, he has also had his fair share of less-than-stellar projects. One example is the much-derided live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is regarded as one of the worst movies of the time period. Despite having a much larger body of successful work, the high-profile nature of some of the less well-received projects often leads to much more criticism cast on the filmmaker himself than is fair to expect for someone so accomplished.
Another point of contention that certain fans have with Shyamalan is that he seems to do less than stellar work at adapting other mediums to the big screen, even when the work itself isn’t bad in isolation. A prominent example of this is Shyamalan’s Old, which had a lot of interesting ideas to explore and received better reviews than the aforementioned live-action Avatar project, but still failed to properly adapt the source material. However, this is by no means indicative of Shyamalan’s general ability in the thriller genre, as his filmography speaks for itself in that department.
Knock at the Cabin is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 3, 2023.
