This will come as a blow to Suarez’s hopes of resuming any sort of ‘football-related activity’ at the soonest. The ban handed down by Fifa, for biting Giorgio Chiellini, is the longest in World Cup history.

At a hearing held at Lausanne last Friday, his legal team had argued that the ban was excessive compared to the crime and made a plea to allow him to train with his new club and to confine the ban to international matches. He had also received a separate 9-match international ban.

Barcelona’s league season starts off against Elche on 24 August, but Suarez can now assuredly take the field in his new jersey not before October 26, when they meet Real Madrid in the El Clasico.
