When NCAA officials decided shortly before 9 p.m. CT Sunday to postpone No. 1 LSU’s game against North Carolina Wilmington in Baton Rouge because of expected bad weather, LSU athletic director Joe Alleva brought down the thunder (via nola.com).
NCAA TOURNAMENT 2015: Sunday scores and results
Alleva didn’t get rolling until well into his comments, but clearly the “competitive advantage” is the drizzle that became the downpour of “A terrible decision by the NCAA. Period.”
Here are Alleva’s comments in their entirety:
The game was rescheduled for noon CT Monday, rescuing Wilmington from a second consecutive long day.
The Seahawks (41-17) had lost to LSU (50-10), 2-0, in a game that didn’t finish until 1:10 a.m. Sunday after not starting until 10:15 p.m. Saturday because of a three-hour rain delay in the previous game. Then Wilmington’s 3 p.m. elimination game Sunday afternoon against Tulane was more than three hours late getting started because of rain. The Seahawks won, 8-2, Sunday night, pushing toward 10 p.m.
If LSU wins Monday, it advances to the best-of-three Super Regional round. A Wilmington win forces a second game between the teams at 7 p.m. Monday — weather permitting.
Monday’s forecast: Partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain.
