The city’s chief of police, Jimmy Broussard, claimed to have not known that the siren was from The Purge, a movie nearly as violent as Mortal Kombat. An additional statement from city police stated that no such siren would be used in the future to signal the lockdown.

A video of the incident uploaded by a Crowley news station features the sound of the siren, which does sound strikingly similar to the one from The Purge. For those unfamiliar, the film is a horror movie set in a dystopian version of the United States, where once a year all crime is legal for a 12-hour period.

While an actual purge is about as far-fetched as one could get, the confusion among residents is understandable, with many likely assuming that it had been a prank. Of course, there are more Purge movies coming, so fans likely haven’t heard the last of the siren just yet. At least for now, Crowley residents know their city isn’t in danger of complete anarchy.
